Pirelli HangarBicocca presents “NOw/here”, the solo exhibition by Gian Maria Tosatti, which will be open from 23 February to 30 July 2023.
Gian Maria Tosatti, born in Rome in 1980, lives and works in Naples and is considered one of the most interesting Italian artists of recent years.In 2022 he represented Italy at the 59th Venice Biennale.With an unprecedented intervention in the space of the Shed, Tosatti will offer the viewer the opportunity to confront a dimension never presented before in his practice.
The large-format pictorial works are set up in close relationship with the architecture of the Pirelli HangarBicocca space, generating moments of dialogue and contrasting situations.
The “NOw/here” exhibition, curated by Vicente Todolí, consists of two cycles of works presented for the first time in Pirelli HangarBicocca.
Responding to the request for a retrospective project, Gian Maria Tosatti has elaborated the exhibition in a very particular way, working on new works that were the synthesis of the feelings that have animated his research over the last twenty years.
The corpus of works develops around large format elements, ten large backgrounds of graphite and white charcoal on canvas, suspended from the ceiling, which represent a dialogue with the Zeitgeist (Spirit of the time) and the feeling of the generation to which the artist belongs. The works are conceived as “mirrors”, open questions that directly involve the visitor.
Ritratti is composed of four paintings in gold and rust on iron panels assembled and installed on jointed tube structures.
