A Tribute to Pierre Cardin: Furniture Like Sculptures To Dress Up Your Home

During the 2017 Salone del Mobile in Milan, the Carla Sozzani art gallery held the exhibition “Pierre Cardin, Les Sculptures Utilitaires”, which introduced the world to the ambitious project that the designer had started back in 1970 and that is still under development today.

Pierre Cardin’s art, his aesthetic taste, his constant research and experimentation are elements that the whole world associates with the great fashion designer, who was born in Italy and moved to France with his family after the First World War.

Aged fourteen, he started his apprenticeship with a tailor, then moved to Paris in 1945, where he worked his way up in the world of fashion at some of the most famous houses of the time, like Schiaparelli and Dior.

In 1950, he established his own fashion house, where he revealed his avant-gardist vision of geometries and lines in dresses, until he developed the concept of unisex fashion. What is an emblem of luxury for many comes from a solid history of sublime aesthetic sense and outstanding entrepreneurial flair.

Besides dresses, his art also surfaced from his house furniture range of timeless sculptures.

I think as a sculptor, I create a form. It is a process where what matters is to create a line that was not there before. And now it is here to stay

This very concept, which the exhibition made tangible, revealed Pierre Cardin’s artistic identity in a collection of timeless furniture pieces.

His range of haute-couture furniture enhanced the historical conception of sculpture by adding the functional quality of containment. The volumes dress up in color, the geometrical shapes intermingle,  the curves, embossing and symmetrical cuts create elements that make these creations not just simple furniture pieces, but real works of art.

It is a complete furniture collection for the living and night areas and lighting, made with the most refined Italian crafting techniques, where the fine art of cabinet-making alternates with the experimentation of materials like plexiglass and steel. Perfect, mirrored, full lacquering, bursting with colors so that it gives the feeling of handling something invaluable.
