Many different brands, especially activewear ones, are committed to going green thanks to various technological innovations, such as an app that gives designers information about energy and water consumption during the creative process, and initiatives that aim at clearing the oceans from plastic by giving a second life to waste and transforming it into new products.

Once, designing a collection meant mostly evaluating marketing guidelines and style trends, but nowadays the fashion industry is much more careful about the environment, taking measures in order to reduce water wastage and control the pollution caused by chemical substances, pigments and solvents used for dying fabrics.

Is it just an attempt at being politically correct? On the contrary, circular economies are becoming a powerful driver for the fashion industry, raising awareness on the potentially irreversible consequences that the textile industry can cause on the environment.

The latest eco-friendly project created by Balenciaga is a limited edition capsule collection designed in collaboration with the famous luxury e-commerce brand, Farfetch. The collections for men, women and kids include some of Balenciaga’s cult pieces such as oversize coats and denim jackets, all made without leather, feathers or fur.

The main statement pieces are t-shirts featuring drawings of animals that are currently facing extinction, such as white rhinos, giant pandas and Asian elephants. The illustrations symbolize the attention of Demna Gvasalia’s brand to environmental and animal protection issues.
