The first images of the collection date back to 1992, when McCurry was in Kuwait to document the tremendous environmental and fauna devastation caused by the Gulf War. The famous “Camels in burning oil fields” photograph (which also earned him a World Press Photo Award) dates back to that time.

It is not just animals endangered by those immortalized by McCurry.

There are animals that help humans survive by doing some of the hard work of farming, pets, wild animals or domesticated animals.

The idea of the exhibition was born after years in which the activity of the photoreporter was mainly focused on the human being in its most varied declinations and from the realization of consciousness, happened retracing his work, that often animal species are approached to the human species.

No matter where I go in the world, I see people immersed in books. It doesn’t matter if they are rich or poor, young or old, they find comfort, information, distraction, and inspiration between the covers of their books. Whether readers are engaged in the sacred or the secular, they are, for a time, transported to another world.
Ernest Hemingway said, “There is no friend as loyal as a book.”

This seems to have led him to reflect on the fact that the world does not belong to us, that we share it with many other creatures with which, however, we do not share the same responsibilities. In fact, we are the only ones really able to act on the environment that surrounds us, destroying it or, on the contrary, trying to defend it. An absolutely current and very important topic that is always good to bring to the attention.

Animals invites us to reflect on the fact that we are not alone in this world

explains the curator of the Biba Giacchetti exhibition that continues

in the midst of all living creatures around us. But above all, it leaves a message to visitors: that even though humans and animals share the same land, only we humans have the necessary power to defend and save the planet
