Is time a luxury?

In this age of hurry, of the “all at once”, is time the only real luxury we have left?

A multi-faceted question that can be pondered from different perspectives.

The global fashion system and the splendid shows that just ended were the perfect chance to observe and reflect on the most followed thinkers of our age: the designers and creative directors of billionaire brands.

Time was the core theme of Alessandro Michele and Virgil Abloh’s shows, respectively for Gucci and Louis Vuitton, in Milan and Paris.

Alessandro Michele turns to his past, to his childhood. He seems to be looking for and ultimately find that lost Time, and plays with it by making it the inspiration for his Milan show. Hourglass dust scattered on the runway, invitations sent by the not-so-dormant alter ego of himself at 5 years of age. Going back in time “is the key to redefine things”: this appears to be Gucci’s most powerful statement.

At the Paris Fashion Week, Louis Vuitton creates a symbolic invitation: a branded wall clock bearing the LV logo, whose hands turn counterclockwise. Maybe a metaphor and measure of our lives, maybe the umpteenth cult piece by Mr. Abloh.

At the show, time does not exist, rules are overturned, and there are no more constraints. Mankind finds itself in a dreamlike dimension with no future. Wasted time, rather than lost. A set immersed in Magritte’s clouds.

The same dimension can be found at the beautiful exhibition celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Magritte Museum in Brussels, dedicated to one of the most famous artists of all times.

Dalí & Magritte stages a first-time comparison between two icons of Surrealism, René Magritte (Lessines, 1898 – Brussels, 1967) and Salvador Dalì (Figueres, 1904 – 1989), by highlighting their similarities and mutual influences.

Over 80 pieces including paintings, photographs, sculptures, videos and drawings from more than 400 museums, galleries and private collections all over the world, making up a narrative path that tells the story of a friendship and a continuous artistic confrontation.

Art that inspires fashion, once again?

The ideas of wasting, finding and looking for time have always been much debated. The influence of creatives and their standpoints unceasingly creates contaminations, the result of contemporary research.
