In conjunction with the Festivaletteratura, Marc Chagall. As in Painting, So in Poetry will open to the public. Chagall (Vitebsk, 7 July 1887 – Saint-Paul-de-Vence, 28 March 1985) is the painter who, together with Picasso and Robert Delaunay, inspired the majority number of poets, writers and militant critics of the twentieth century.

With the exhibition – curated by Gabriella Di Milia, in collaboration with the Tret’jakov State Gallery in Moscow, promoted by the Municipality of Mantua and organized and produced by the Electa publishing house – the Palazzo della Ragione will be returned to the city after a long and complex enhancement intervention that has made it ready to host a broad program of cultural activities.

The 130 works on display – and among them the complete cycle of the seven canvases painted in 1920 by the artist from Vitebsk for the Moscow Chamber Theater – will be exhibited in the medieval setting of the Palace, among extraordinary cycles of frescoes that still tell the community adventures.

The exhibition will be a precious opportunity to admire the villages painted by Chagall with a deliberately childish elementarity, but also the virtuoso decompositions, the geometric inventions of the artist, master of that optically associative language, commensurate with that of the dream and for which objects , animals, characters, enlarged or miniaturized, become catalysts of moods. Among the exhibited works you can also admire the famous oil on canvas Above the city and the tempera on gray paper that portrays The musicians.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog published by Electa that, in addition to exploring the artistic and cultural contaminations absorbed by Chagall between Vitebsk, St. Petersburg, Paris and Moscow, tells through an anthology of writings, many of which never translated into Italy, the fascination exercised by the Russian painter on poets, artists, writers of the last century.
