Founded by Matteo Hoffman and Francesca Giuliani in 2013, Blank Space is a platform where to experiment, with architecture playing an unprecedented role. Alongside Blank Space, Fairy Tales 2020 was launched too, a fictitious architecture contest running for the 7th edition this year.

Aspiring participants are required to submit a project exploring the current events through an architecture render and a tale. Every work is judged by a committee of architects, designers and storytellers, who select the three winners.

This year’s winners are Amás Fischer and Carlotta Cominetti, founders of Virginlemon, a studio based in Paris, who presented a project titled The Year Without A Winter.

The renders walk us to a future forced to come to terms with climate change and temperatures constantly above normal.

In that world, people are constrained to live in self-sufficient buildings, cooled by hundreds and hundreds of air conditioners, with the desert spreading all around on the outside. Amás Fischer and Carlotta Cominetti themselves have now realized how their tale and project, where people can only wait for the situation to change and technology permeates nearly every aspect of life, are really similar to the life that we are experiencing these days.

However, the message that they wish to spread is one of hope. Although the scenarios presented in “The Year Without A Winter” depict a post-apocalyptic world, the two architects stress how tough times are the moment when mankind manages to reinvent itself and bring something new to life.
