Last January 16, Fondazione Bracco has inaugurated a photographic exhibition dedicated to portraying the skills of some of the scientists involved in the #100esperte project, created to promote female expertise in sectors still perceived as male-dominated.
The exhibition, featuring shots by famous photographer Gerald Bruneau, is focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and will be open until 30 June 2019 in Milan at the CDI – Italian Diagnostic Center in Via Saint Bon 20, Milan.

In fact, research on the presence of women in media shows that women are very rarely consulted as experts. Almost always, men explain and interpret the world: in 82% of cases, according to the results of the Global Media Monitoring Project 2015.

In 2016, the Pavia Observatory and the Gi.U.Li.A., in collaboration with the Bracco Foundation and with the support of the European Commission Representation in Italy, launched the project “100 women against stereotypes” in order to contribute to the construction of an equal society, where merit is the reason for career and visibility.

Biologists, chemists, pharmacologists, engineers, astrophysicists, mathematicians, surgeons, palaeontologists and computer scientists: these are just some of the professions of the scientists portrayed by famous French photographer Gerard Bruneau, an eclectic and sensitive artist.

Observing each portrait is like crossing a threshold that gives access to a protected, private environment, a space reserved for research and thought. These are the experts’ workplaces: laboratories, universities, clinics, places where women and men commit themselves every day to expand the boundaries of knowledge.
The new attention to women equality throughout the world is an extraordinary lever for social and political change

but there is still a long way to go. That is the reason for the 100 women against stereotypes project. First we created a platform, then a book, and now this photographic exhibition portraying some of the scientist that have decided to put themselves out there for their profession

The exhibition is part of a series of exhibitions launched in 2010 by the Bracco Foundation in collaboration with the Italian Diagnostic Center, with the aim of giving patients, doctors and staff the opportunity to enjoy a cultural experience, believing, as scientific evidence suggests, that this contributes to an overall improvement in the quality of life.
