PFW SS 2020: social engagement and creative inspirations for DIOR’s green fashion

It is a short step from these luxuriant sets to jungle prints, and Versace took it: flesh-and-blood Jennifer Lopez walked down the runway in the iconic Jungle Print Dress that she wore at the 2000 Grammy Awards and led to the birth of Google Images. A throwback to celebrate twenty years since the print launch.

Paris did not looked on. Christian Dior’s runway was lined with a series of small shrubs, the result of a collaboration between Maria Grazia Chiuri and Parisian environmental design union Coloco. A project of responsible decoration oriented to sustainability and the reconsideration of urban redevelopment through green spaces. The plants presented at the show will soon find a new life in the streets and squares of the French capital.

When fashion focuses on the hottest socio-cultural issues, it is anything but frivolous.

In the label’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection, there is a certain connection between the setting and the creative director’s inspiration and curiosity for the founder’s daughter: Catherine Dior. A fighter with the Resistance and a concentration camp prisoner, she rose from the battle fields to look after plant and flowers as a botanical specialist. As to emphasize the paradox between yesterday and today, at a time when climate change and the environmental crisis are looming over us.

The collection styles honor the codes of Chiuri’s language: square jackets, female long-sleeves dresses with transparencies and trousers with relaxed silhouettes. Shoes feature flats, logo espadrilles and ankle boots.

Tye-dye, floral prints and houndstooth designs embellish the collection pieces. Dresses come in various versions with prints, embroideries, applications and different fabrics, while accessories wink at raffia, as in hats, and strappy details, like belts with mini logos. It-bags with prominent hardware logos and monograms complete the collection.

Creative touches for garments conceived to stand the test of the time. Truly sustainable-oriented fashion.
