The new hype in luxury fashion: fungi-based leather

It is a fact: the eco-friendly revolution has begun, and fashion and design are at its forefront.

The biggest luxury brands from both industries have opted for a new communication strategy based on values like environmental consciousness, sustainable production, and the relentless search for new solutions.

One of the most important stages of the manufacturing process that fashion, luxury and design have been trying to make “greener” is sourcing, where they have been increasingly looking for innovative, alternative materials to replace those traditionally used.

Brands like Adidas, the Kering group, Lululemon and Stella McCartney have opted for Mylo, a fungi-derived leather engineered by US biotechnology firm Bolt Threads.

Made from mycelium, i.e. the mushroom roots, Mylo rivals animal leather for texture, softness and suppleness.

Designable in all colors, finishings and embossing patterns, Mylo could not go unnoticed from environmental-conscious fashion behemoths: Adidas, the Kering group, Lululemon and Stella McCartney have signed an unprecedented partnership to form a consortium with Bolt Threads, aiming to bring a whole range of products made with Mylo to the catwalks in 2021.

This new frontier in vegan leather combines research, innovation and respect of the environment while meeting all strict requirements that the major fashion houses apply when it comes to choosing the materials to use on their sophisticated pieces.

Starting as early as 2021, vegan leather Mylo will be seen on catwalks at the biggest Adidas fashion shows.
