The 2023 Met Gala theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”.
The 2023 Met Gala was under a spell of Karl Lagerfeld. On the red carpet we saw: black and white, tweeds, pearls, ties, and even the designer’s cat. The Met Gala took place on May 1, 2023, which is the first Monday in May, and was a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, celebrated today by the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum with the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty“, presented by Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa and Anna Wintour, Global Editor Director of Vogue.
Just like every year, the Met Gala has a theme, and this year’s honors not only a concept, but a person: “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” is intended to celebrate the late designer, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 85. Several actresses decided to pay homage to Karl, choosing archival looks of Chanel, Fendi and Balmain. Others also chose to pay tribute to Lagerfeld working with different designers such as Valentino, Versace and Thom Browne. A long list of attendees were all inspired by Karl Lagerfeld extensive bridal archive: the designer’s Chanel Haute Couture shows always ended with a bridal look. There were also plenty of feline references to Choupette, Lagerfeld’s beloved cat.
Chanel’s archive at the Met Gala
Celebrating the opening of The Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, ambassadors and friends of Chanel gathered on the occasion of the 2023 Met Gala and decided to wear Chanel’s archive pieces. Dua Lipa, co-chair for the Costume Institute Benefit, wore a long corseted dress in ivory wool tweed with a matching bolero jacket, from the Haute Couture fall-winter 1992 collection.
Nicole Kidman wore the custom dress she wore in the Chanel N°5 advertising campaign directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2004. The dress is made of pink silk tulle with a long train of 4 meters in circumference and it is embroidered with 250 pink feathers and over 3000 silver crystals and sequins. Kristen Stewart could not be missing. The actress wore a white cotton drill jacket with a white silk chiffon blouse and black cotton gabardine pants, from the Cruise 2016/17 collection.
Tribute to Lagerfeld
Some stars chose to wear archival gowns, others chose to pay homage to Karl with custom designs from other brands. Rihanna wore a Valentino Haute Couture gown and cape especially designed for her by Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli: a silk faille dress with a 5-meter train and 14-meter hem and a silk faille cape with 30 camellias composed of 500 petals, made by 30 seamstresses. Anne Hathaway wore a Swarovski crystal-embellished dress by Versace and a coin necklace by Bulgari.
Jeremy Pope’s look was just breath-taking. He wore a long floral embroidered cape, worn over crepe flare pants, featuring a 10-meter train and a hand drawn illustration of Karl Lagerfeld, designed by Balmain.
Bridal looks and Choupette
Karl’s love for wedding dresses could not be missed. Penélope Cruz, co-chair for the Costume Institute Benefit and Chanel ambassador, wore a custom long dress with a large shawl collar in light blue organza embroidered with silver sequins and a silver leather belt embellished with pearls inspired by look 81, from the Haute Couture Spring-Summer 1988 collection. Alton Mason, Chanel’s first black model, also decided to pay homage to Karl with a wedding dress.
Jared Leto and Doja Cat chose to honor the creative in a special yet ingenious way. Leto wore a giant cat costume, while Doja wore a white Oscar de la Renta gown and cat facial prosthetics.
