MFW Fall 2020-21: Missoni’s patchwork of geometries

A free composition of simple and graphic shapes, with patterns of horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines originally intertwined: this is the leitmotif of the 68 looks showcased by the brand

“Imagine a vast sheet of paper on which straight Lines, Triangles, Squares, Pentagons, Hexagons, and other figures, instead of remaining fixed in their places, move freely about, on or in the surface, but without the power of rising above or sinking below it, very much like shadows – only hard and with luminous edges.” So read the opening lines of Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott Abbott, which might have inspired Missoni’s Fall 2020-21 collection.

Besides geometric patterns, catching the eye right at a first glance, the collection hides a deeper meaning: a story of empowerment and awareness for women, told in a straight line that unfolds outfit by outfit on the runway amid volumes, bold mix & matches, and neat flattering silhouettes.

Women’s power is embodied by the Hadid sisters, the top models of the moment.

Stamped into the house’s DNA and the emblem of the comfy trend in contemporary fashion, knitwear dominates the collection in all its forms – oversized kimono-style belted cardigans, tailored jackets, ribbed tops, pencil skirts, and trousers.

This extraordinary patchwork of geometric shapes draws from a sober color palette ranging from earth tones to light blue and red hints, with ever-present lurex. In fact, the shiny metallic thread has always marked the stylistic path walked by Missoni’s founders, and is still fueling Angela Missoni’s creativity today.

Geometric subjects and variations for a show where men and women parade together in perfect Missoni style, or “Missonismo”, as the brand named it to share optimism.
