“BREATHE – RESPIRO” is the theme to the 9thedition of the Green and Landscape Festival, Italy’s largest green expo. Scheduled for May 10-12, 2019 in the fascinating setting of the gardens at Rome’s Auditorium Parco della Musica, the festival is conceived and organized by Altri Paesaggi in collaboration with Fondazione Musica per Roma, running the venue.

This year, the festival has some great news in store for visitors. The themes it explores are taken to new extents, so that getting in touch with green is not just a hobby, but a true lifestyle. It examines and encourages the human inclination to dialogue with nature, and invites us to see green not as a luxury but as a primary necessity, as an essential tool to plan the present and future generations’ lives.

Breathing, the unconscious mechanical action we rely on for survival, is the heart of the expo, with plants and trees as another central theme for the crucial role they play in human lives. Contests, contemporary gardens, botanic nurseries, design, architecture, lectures and workshops explore the relationship between humanity, nature and cities.

The cities of the future will face the key challenge of creating green urban areas  ̶  larger and larger, bushier and bushier  ̶  able to lower the air temperature, to regulate water flows, to purify the environment around, and to mitigate the climate change in continuously enlarging and overheating urban centers.

Consequently, the urban forest grows to be a source of inspiration, a model and a tool for designers and architects to integrate the interiors and exteriors of their buildings with large green spaces, which are not just decorative installations any longer, but truly breathingsystems.

Through the language of landscape architecture, the Festival invites to ponder the need for a radical change in our relationship with green, involving communities and those who govern them, and affecting our daily and long-term choices. It’s a call to observe and listen to Nature along a contemporary path escaping schemes and conventions, in order to identify the issues that are jeopardizing its balance the most.

A rare opportunity for visitors to live a fun, engaging experience that also invites us all to consider how we can help the Earth breathe.
