The NIAF world

Founded in 1975 in Washington D.C., the National Italian American Foundation represents an important point of reference for 20 million Italian Americans living in the United States. Through its collaboration with the highest authorities in the United States, the Congress and the White House, NIAF protects the rich heritage, the values, and the traditions brought to the United States by the Italian Americans, and reaffirms the strong contribution of the Italian community to the history and progress of the United States of America.

  • NIAF promotes and develops the economic and cultural relations between Italy and the United States;
  • Finances and organizes conferences and national congresses focusing on the Italian culture and language;
  • Grants a number of scholarships worth almost 1 million dollars every year to Italian-American students;
  • Monitors the national mass media in order to counteract the too often negative image of the Italian American citizens and of their cultural traditions;
  • Fights, in collaboration with other Italian American organizations, against any defamatory campaign aimed at our fellow countrymen.

To celebrate the great legacy that we all share and the goals that we have achieved together, every year NIAF organizes a gala in Washington D.C. The event usually sees the attendance of the President of the United States, in addition to several important personalities from the political, cultural and financial sectors, well-known Italian-Americans and around 3,000 guests from the United States and Italy.

During this event, the Foundation bestows awards on notable Italian and Italian American people who have distinguished themselves in their professional and/or public role. In the past, NIAF has honoured personalities such as Antonin Scalia, the first Italian American Supreme Court judge, Frank Sinatra, Joe Di Maggio, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Liza Minnelli, Al Pacino, Luciano Pavarotti, Sofia Loren, Giorgio Armani…

On November 4, NIAF will celebrate its 42nd Anniversary at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington. Some of the award winners this year are Alessandro Profumo, CEO of Leonardo, Princess Beatrice of Bourbon, Jon DeLuca – Director Doctor’s Associates Inc/Subway Restaurants Board of Directors, Vittorio Grigolo – tenor, and Nick Stellino – TV Chef and Author.
