Serena Luxury Mosaic at the Venice Glass Week 2020

After studying architecture in Italy and abroad, a few years ago Michelangelo Serena founded the SERENA Luxury Mosaic brand, where the poetry of mosaic blends with the charm of blown glass in a mix of traditions and skilled crafting techniques.

Already invited to exhibit his pieces the Murano Glass Museum, Michelangelo, born in 1987, descends from the Serena noble family of Murano glassmakers, who already were among the Italian aristocratic families’ favorite suppliers. The Serenas were one of the first families in Murano to make the Venice island renowned all over the world.

Today, for the first time in the history of art, the two most precious forms of the same fluid material – glass – combine to create unique pieces.

Because of the peculiar making techniques and the inherent nature of the materials, the glass shape and color mix with the mosaic arrangements and tones to create unique pieces, with the most diverse details.  The harmony and balance of shapes are the result of accurate research, and the lines of blown glass are designed so as to reach the perfect balance with the mosaic.

Serena Luxury Mosaic

Selected for the “The Venice Glass Week Hub” group exhibition at the Glass Week 2020, Michelangelo Serena exhibited his own “Aureo” suspension lamp, in 4 elements that correspond to its four different variations. It is a blown-glass cone 26cm high and 20cm in diameter, made in Murano at the Seguso Gianni kiln, black with gold under crystal glass, lined inside with gold mosaic tiles finished in yellow or white gold leaf, either smooth or wavy, applied by Michelangelo himself.

The metallic parts covering the cone cable clamp and the cylindrical washer are made from 24-karat gold stainless steel. This precious coating inside the blown-glass cone is not evident from a distance, and the effect only comes on when the LED light is switched on. It is absolutely fascinating, as the mosaic gold tiles are really close to the light bulb.

The four lamps can be suspended at the same height and from the same height, and hung from elements whose shape and size can be adjusted based on indications from the curator, for the best positioning in the available spaces.

Serena Luxury Mosaic

Michelangelo Serena was born in 1987 in Spilimbergo, in the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. After studying architecture in Italy and abroad, a few years ago Michelangelo Serena founded the SERENA Luxury Mosaic brand, where the poetry of mosaic blends with the charm of blown glass in a mix of traditions and skilled crafting techniques. Every piece is shaped by the artistic sensitivity of founder Michelangelo Serena, who draws all models by hand, and personally supervises the making of blown glass at the prestigious Seguso Gianni kiln in Murano.

His creations are completed at the laboratory in Spilimbergo, where mosaic tiles are applied by Michelangelo himself. He descends from the Serena noble family of Murano glassmakers, who already were among the Italian royal families’ favorite suppliers. The Serenas were one of the first families in Murano to make the Venice island renowned all over the world, especially by inventing the “filigree” technique in 1527.

Michelangelo Serena exhibited some works from his collections at the Ca’ Sagredo Hotel in Venice during the Venice Glass Week 2018.
