Land of rivers and lakes, Lombardy hosts wonderful islands.
Lombardy is an extraordinary region, characterized by its numerous lakes that create a unique and captivating landscape. Rich in waterways, rivers, and reflections, this area also boasts stunning islands tucked away in verdant surroundings, evoking dreams of exotic getaways.
Among them is Comacina Island, a verdant oasis in Lake Como, reachable by boat from Ossuccio in the municipality of Tremezzina. Inhabited since Roman times, it features the Romanesque Basilica of St. Eufemia. Particularly striking is the firework display on the water during the Feast of St. John.
In the center of Lake Pusiano lies Cypress Island, offering relaxing paths through lush greenery, where peacocks, cranes, storks, turtles, and squirrels roam freely. It is a perfect spot to rejuvenate amidst nature.
On Lake Iseo, Montisola gained prominence in 2016 with Christo’s “Floating Piers” installation. Today, Montisola is a green oasis where cars are prohibited, ideal for hiking through wooded areas and olive groves. Visitors can also reach the Sanctuary of Ceriola, situated 600 meters above the lake, offering breathtaking views.
On Lake Garda, San Biagio Island, also known as Rabbit Island, is renowned for its green meadows and the many rabbits that roam freely. It is an ideal spot for swimming in crystal-clear waters, sunbathing, and enjoying the views of the Fortress of Manerba cliffs. This island can be reached on foot when conditions permit, via a sandbar that connects it to the mainland, or by a taxi-boat from Porto Torchio.
Finally, on Lake Varese, Isolino Virginia is a charming triangular island in the municipality of Biandronno, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011 for its archaeological and environmental significance.
These islands, each with its own unique features, contribute to making the lakes of Lombardy a remarkable region where history, nature, and culture blend harmoniously, offering visitors unforgettable experiences.
