Summer 2021: even bikinis become eco-sustainable

It was May of last year when, in the pages of the Mc Kinsey “Time for Change” report, it was expected that sustainability would become the new normal in all luxury sectors.

The prediction came true and beachwear also followed the dictates of sustainable luxury.

The most prestigious beaches, the most luxurious yachts and the most exclusive swimming pools have come alive with splendid high fashion creations that have been able to combine charm and respect for the environment.

The new trend is eco-design

Of course, to get an excellent swimsuit you need to meet some basic requirements: resistance to chlorine and salt, elasticity, quick drying and protection from UVA rays for example.

Precisely for this reason, up to now fibers such as elastane or polyester, derived from petroleum, have been used.

The big fashion houses, including the seaside, however, are turning their gaze towards a new way of producing their creations: recycling.

Natural fibers cannot always guarantee the necessary comfort for a bathing suit, so the beachwear houses focus on the intelligent reuse of waste fibers.

Where the new sustainable costumes come from

The production of recycled fibers is a real new trend in beach fashion.

The 2021 collections have seen a wide use of polyester deriving from the recycling of plastic bottles or from plastic waste recovered from the seabed.

There is also recycled polyester resulting from the processing and transformation of fishing nets or from the recycling of material losses during the manufacture of the fiber.

The fibers of the future

The password? Say goodbye to oil.

Research is increasingly moving towards new techniques for the production of eco-sustainable technical materials.

Many fashion houses are working on producing biosynthetic fibers for beach and sportswear.

Arkema’s Rilsan fiber and Evo by Fulgar fiber are for example obtained from castor oil.

A journalist ever since, I love turning the world's events into sentences and lines that can take readers "inside the news", leading them to explore the current happenings with me through my articles. My professional background has allowed me to gain insights into the encounter of two apparently incompatible worlds: luxury and sustainability. Guiding businesses in this direction as a communication manager and event organizer has made me aware that, now more than ever, it is by respecting ourselves and our planet's resources that we should start to create real value.
