Panorama: Art Collector’s Residence in São Paulo

When the proprietors of Panorama, a two-floor luxury apartment in Vila Nova Conceição, an upscale district in Sao Paolo, Brazil, selected Brazilian architect Fernanda Marques of Fernanda Marques Arquitetos Associados to renew their home, they required two things: enough area to properly showcase their burgeoning art collection and a swimming pool.

Although very mixed in nature, Marques saw that both requests served a primary urge to surround oneself with visual stimuli and as such the pool was created not just for swimming but also for viewing. And that’s how this unusual luxury apartment, evocatively named Panorama, ended up having a swimming pool right in the center of the living room. Separated by 8cm-thick bonded glass panels, the slender, 10-meter-long pool stretches along the entire length of the double-height living room, operating in force as an outlandish aquarium, only rather than tropical fish or dolphins swimming in the blue waters, you can see someone you know twirl, spin and slide underwater. This especially surreal impression is improved by the green nature that grows on top of the pool making it more of an art installation and really less of a swimming pool.

The modernist interiors of the luxury apartment embrace a minimalist aesthetic of clear, marble surfaces, neutral hues and a diverse range of luxury furniture by mid-century designers such as Joaquim Tenreiro and Zanine de Caldas, an ideal backdrop for the owners’ art collection which incorporates very esteemed artists such as Ernesto Neto, Edgard de Souza, Manoel Rio Branco, Zerbini and Tunga.
