Painter and murderer on the solemn background of the Rome of the early seventeenth century, Caravaggio (1571-1610) is one of the most passionate and powerfully expressive artists: protagonist of a real Mediterranean Odyssey, but at the same time capable of revolutionizing the course of European painting.
The volume wants to bring us closer to this master of Italian art from a new point of view. Forgoing once for the usual chronological sequence, the works of Caravaggio are considered here as a whole, in the two decades at the turn of the year 1600.
From chapter to chapter, we will observe particular aspects of the Milanese painter’s art: the presence of recurring patterns, the passion for blades and daggers, the obsession with severed heads, the exceptional and pioneering skill in still life, and so on.
Among the lights and shadows of a passionate painting, Caravaggio calls us on the scene, involving us in a fact that is being done here and now, here and now, under our eyes. His painting enters our life.
Art historian, Stefano Zuffi deals with the period between Renaissance and Baroque. He is the author of over one hundred publications, in particular on Dur̈er, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Tiziano and Caravaggio.
