After three months of silence, music returns to Ravello. The protraction of the pandemic does not yet allow to return to enjoy a concert in the presence but the Ravello Foundation, with the support of the Campania Region, feels a strong duty to return to making music in the hope of being able to reopen the gates of Villa Rufolo soon and welcome lovers and enthusiasts of the City of Music.
On the occasion of the upcoming Easter holidays, therefore, the notes will return to echo in the Church of San Giovanni del Toro, in which what Haydn has always considered one of his best works will be recorded: The last seven words of Christ on the cross in the version for quartet of ‘arches.
Music returns to Ravello with Haydn’s “The last seven words of Christ on the cross” with a live concert!
Haydn composed these pages at the request of a canon from Cadiz who was looking for original music for the Good Friday ceremonies. A year later, in 1787, to meet the needs of amateurs who were unable to have the necessary orchestra, Haydn prepared a transcription for String Quartet and finally in 1796 a version for choir and orchestra.
The composition is divided into seven Sonatas in slow time which meditate on the last sentences pronounced by Christ on the cross, preceded by a majestic introduction and concluded with a Presto describing the earthquake that shook Calvary as the Gospel of Matthew tells.
The protagonist of the concert is the String Quartet of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, composed of the masters Cecilia Laca and Giuseppe Carotenuto, violins; Antonio Bossone, viola; Luca Signorini, cello.
The concert will be broadcast in first vision on Friday 2 April at 6.00 pm on the official websites www.ravellofestival.com, www.fondazioneravello.it, on the Foundation’s Facebook pages and on the cultura.regione.campania.it portal.
Haydn’s pages will be introduced by a listening guide by Eduardo Savarese, Neapolitan magistrate and writer, born in 1979, passionate lover of classical music and opera that will be broadcast on the same channels on Thursday, April 1st, at 4.00 pm..
